I created and rode a route for Adventure Bike Rider Magazine, which was published in the March/April 2024 edition. The route takes a scenic ride across East Anglia taking in several WWII airfields. My good friend Col joined me for the trip and we started with a hearty breakfast in the Officer’s Mess at Duxford Aerodrome, before heading east to Bottisham Airfield for our first stop. Bottisham was home to a squadron of USAF P51 Mustangs, and volunteers have been creating an ever-increasing and fascinating museum which is well worth a visit. Next stop was Lakenheath which despite its WWI and WWII origins is still an active USAF base, where you often get the opportunity to see F-35 jets amongst others in action. The route from Lakenheath gave us the opportunity for a little easy off-roading via the Harling Drove, which is suitable for big adventure bikes and novice off-roaders alike (this section is easily avoidable if you’re not on a suitable machine) Snetterton Race Circuit comes next where you’ll find a memorial to the 96th Bomb Group and a cafe if you require a top up. The route continues through the country lanes across to the coast at Southwold via Seething Airfield. If the weather’s nice it’s a chance to grab an ice cream before pointing your bike south to head towards the final destination of RAF Bentwaters. But there’s another airfield museum to visit at Parham before you get there.
